Segment 1 Laingsburg
About Segment 1:
Students under the age of 18 years old are eligible to take a Segment 1 class.
Segment 1 includes 24 hours of classroom, six driving hours outside of the classroom, and a minimum of four hours of observation time in a training vehicle.
The State of Michigan requires attendance for all classroom hours, behind-the-wheel drive hours, and in-the-car observation hours. Students must be flexible with their availability in scheduling Behind-the-Wheel and Observation sessions. BEHIND-THE-WHEEL SESSIONS ARE HELD BOTH DURING THE WEEK AND ON WEEKENDS.
***Behind-the-Wheel driving instruction is based on instructor availability.***
The minimum age a teen can be to enter driver’s education: is 14 years and 8 months of age on or before the FIRST DAY OF CLASS and must also have parent/guardian permission to take the course.
Successful completion of a state-approved driver education program does not, alone, make a teenager a responsible, experienced driver. Traffic safety education involves family, community, industry, government, and personal factors such as motivation, maturity, and perceptive abilities.

It contains valuable information on graduated driver licensing, driver education, coaching tips for parents, and more. Parents and teens are encouraged to read this publication.
